How the dog breed identifier works
You take a photo or pick one from your library. Miyu looks at what is visible and compares it with the look of known breeds.
The result is one best guess with a confidence level (low, medium or high), plus the three things it leaned on most: colour, coat and body type. A short sentence explains the reasoning, for example the ear shape or the coat pattern.
What a photo can and cannot tell you
A photo shows appearance, and appearance is only part of the story. Two dogs that look alike can have very different ancestry, and many mixed-breed dogs look like a breed that is not in their family tree at all.
- Good for: a quick, fun answer about a dog you are curious about, a starting point for a rescue dog, or a breed name to read up on.
- Not a replacement for: pedigree papers or a DNA test. If the exact ancestry matters, for health screening or breeding, use a DNA test.
- Changes the result: lighting, angle, a haircut, a puppy coat, or a dog that is wet or partly hidden.
How to take a photo that gets a better guess
- Use daylight or a bright room. Avoid flash, which flattens the coat colour.
- Get the whole dog in frame, standing, from the side or a three-quarter angle.
- Take a second photo of the face if the first guess has low confidence.
- Keep collars, coats and harnesses out of the way if you can.
Mixed breeds and rescue dogs
Most dogs in shelters are mixes. For a mixed dog, Miyu names the breed it resembles most, and the confidence level tells you how strongly. A low or medium confidence on a rescue dog is normal and honest: it means the dog shows features of more than one breed.
If you like the guess, you can save it to your dog's profile in Miyu, so its care tips and health reminders fit the breed.
Frequently asked questions
Is the dog breed identifier free?
Miyu is free to download on iPhone and includes breed checks. A subscription removes the monthly limit.
How accurate is a breed identifier app?
It is a guess from appearance. For dogs that look typical of their breed it is often right. For mixed dogs it names the closest look, which may not match their DNA. Miyu shows a confidence level so you know how sure it is.
Can it identify a puppy's breed?
Yes, but puppies change a lot as they grow. Expect lower confidence and try again when the adult coat comes in.
Does it work for cats too?
Yes. The same breed check works for cats.
